Nobody calls it concentration risk when it's a salary

You have one client. They pay one hundred per cent of your invoices. There is no second client, and they can end it with thirty days' notice. If a friend described their business that way, you would worry for them.

That is a job. It is the arrangement we were all taught to call the safe one. Nobody calls it concentration risk when the money lands on the same day each month. Regularity and security are two different things, and this year the difference started to show.

Why we're building MyPholyo

A portfolio career is not the risky option. It is the diversified one. The rule that makes it work is the anchor. One stream covers the mortgage and the bills, and it is allowed to be a job. Everything on top has to pay you in money, learning or joy, and the pay has to be worth the hours it takes. Prestige is not payment. Neither is exposure.

That is a position with a floor under it. Lose any one stream and the floor holds. There is one thing missing, though, and it is the same thing every time. Nobody will tell you what any of it is worth.

Fewer than one in two

Every month the New York Fed asks Americans a blunt question: if you lost your job today, how likely is it you would find another one within the next twelve months? The latest reading, published on Friday, was 46.2%. Fewer than one in two, over a whole year, and the most honest description of the modern safety net we have read all year.

Here at home, the Office for National Statistics counts 712,000 vacancies, the lowest in five years, with payrolled employees down 85,000 in the year to May. And Upwork found last autumn that 78 per cent of businesses planned to hire independent talent within three months.

Put those side by side. The organisations shrinking the payroll are the same ones expanding the bench. The work has not gone anywhere. The contract has changed shape, and it changed without asking anyone. That's why MyPholyo exists.
